
Cemetery Tours: “Anti-Slavery and Freedom in Harmar”
Did you know the Harmar community was involved in the anti-slavery movement and was a refuge for multiracial families before the Civil War? Join us to hear the stories of the Underground Railroad leader whose local court case had national implications, a founding family’s legacy that inspired radical abolitionist John Brown to take up his cause, three free-born Muncey brothers who served as bodyguards to a Union general during their Civil War service, a highly respected man who escaped enslavement and served with the famous Iron Brigade, and more.
Cemetery Tour Tips:
· Tours last up to one hour and 15 minutes
· Walking takes place across uneven ground and between headstones
· You’ll be standing at some locations for around 10 – 15 minutes
· Check the weather and dress accordingly
· Bringing water, walking sticks, or easily carried folding chairs is encouraged
· When you arrive at the cemetery, if you already have a reservation or tickets check-in with the Castle team member with a clipboard.
· Unless otherwise noted, tickets will continue to be sold onsite. Paying for your admission with exact change is appreciated.
