Taking inspiration from this year’s 250th anniversary commemorations, this year’s Coming Alive Cemetery Tour explores not only the lives of six fascinating Mariettans, but also the ways generations of Americans have remembered, celebrated, and interpreted the past.

From the Revolutionary War to Marietta’s 150th birthday, meet the people who experienced history firsthand—and those who later worked to make sure those stories were not forgotten.

Alice Leffingwell Creelman

A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution who helped preserve the memory of America’s founding generation.

William Roeser, Jr.

Member of Marietta’s committee for the 1876 United States Centennial celebration.

Joseph Rogers

Revolutionary War soldier who later became a spy and ranger helping protect the young Marietta settlement.

Jewett Palmer

Civil War veteran, former mayor of Marietta, and descendant of Revolutionary War ancestors.

Nathaniel Saltanstall

Revolutionary War naval officer and militia soldier who faced British forces, including troops commanded by Benedict Arnold.

Hazel Ebinger

Member of the committee behind Marietta’s 1938 sesquicentennial celebration and its commemorative pageant.
