Position Title: Guest Service Associate
Location: The Castle Museum, Marietta, OH
Employment Type: Part-Time
Hours & Rate: $14.00 at 10 hours/week

The Castle was founded in 1994 as a historical house museum and became an independent, 501(c)3 non-profit corporation in 2021. Through our historic property, distinctive collections, and dynamic educational programs, The Castle invites a diverse audience to discuss the story of the Marietta, Ohio community and its role in shaping the past, present, and future of our region, state, nation, and world. Our staff and volunteers invite visitors to discover the history of Marietta, Ohio, the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory, and the role our house and its residents played in shaping that story.
Position Summary:
This position supports the Gift Shop Manager in creating and maintaining a welcoming, engaging, and educational experience for all visitors to The Castle Museum. Responsibilities include assisting with daily retail operations such as ticket and gift shop sales, basic inventory support, merchandising, and customer service. The role also provides support with volunteer tour guide scheduling, communication, and coordination to ensure smooth visitor experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
Guest Experience: Welcome guests to the museum for house tours and special events.
Gift Shop Retail Support: Assist with daily gift shop point-of-sale transactions and provide friendly, efficient customer service. Follow all museum policies and applicable procedures to ensure compliant operations. Support end-of-day reconciliation by accurately reporting sales and assisting with deposits as directed.
Collaborate with museum staff to help promote gift shop offerings and support integration of the gift shop into the overall visitor experience.
Assistance with creating social media content to promote the gift shop, visitor experience, and events.
Merchandising and Inventory Support: Assist the Gift Shop Manager with stocking, organizing, pricing, and displaying merchandise in alignment with the museum’s themes and mission. Help monitor inventory levels and communicate restocking needs. Support efforts to introduce new products that enhance the guest experience and contribute to sales.
Volunteer Support: Assist with volunteer tour guide coordination by helping with scheduling, communication, and basic onboarding tasks as directed. Provide support during tours and special events to help ensure a positive experience for both volunteers and visitors.
Assist with preparation and planning for special events and bookings, including food preparation. Willingness to be trained in and assist with food handling.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred, or other management, hospitality, or museum-related experience.
Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in customer services, hospitality, or other relevant fields. Supervisory experience preferred.
Skills:
Strong customer service and sales skills, with a friendly and professional demeanor
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with visitors, volunteers, and staff
Good attention to detail and ability to follow procedures and guidelines
Ability to receive feedback and contribute ideas to improve the visitor and gift shop experience
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
Square point-of-sale system experience is a plus
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
